Austin 2009
Speaking of Austin, here's a quick overview of what we did...
...................Arrived in ....Austin.... 11 a.m. Wed. SJ scooped us up at the airport.  Had an awesome lunch at a very cool Mexican joint called Curra's. Had a quick rehearsal with SJ and Kevin (flew in from ....Denver.... to fill in for Sue on accordion).  Saw Dave Gonzalez/Stone River Boys almost by accident at that evening at the Continental Club Happy Hour. Outstanding.   Stopped by another Mex Restaurant on the way back home (SJ’s). I didn’t realize my Spanish was that bad… Good food and an early bedtime.  ....

Got up Thursday but not early enough for breakfast so we stopped by a little market on the way to the KOOP radio gig.  Was informed by the clerk that SJ was “a very nice person” I concurred and asked if he knew her “never met her before” but could tell she was a very nice person. Turned out to be true.  The radio gig was great! We played a few songs live and conversed with Rod Moag – a very cool experience. http://koop.org/index.php?page=schedule&section=countryswingandrockabillyjamboree   We played Artz Rib House that night, did great, was fed superb BBQ. Not entirely used to playing restaurant gigs but with a little help from Becca (sound engineering)  and Lisa (collected tips) we did just fine. Saw Jesse Dayton after that at the Broken Spoke – what a place!  Back home to SJs sipped beer on sj's patio til 3 something in the morning............

Got up kind of late Friday, went downtown for eats and a little site-seeing.  Played Patsy's Cowgirl Cafe Fri. night – was a lot more confortable with the ‘restaurant gig’ situation.  The place has a very colorful atmosphere and the stage is a blast to play on, great for showing off…. - Saw Dale Watson afterwards @ Broken Spoke - sipped beer on Sj's patio til 3 something in the morning............

Got up Saturday morning - found a Mexican joint in the middle of nowhere - excellent huevos rancheros, drove around, then rested til party at Ashleys, fun time at Ashleys even after the Cops Shut Us Down - they we're very polite tho - must have heard something about don't mess with the Honky Tonk Kind... late nite breakfast(?) at a 24 hour joint called Magnolias, sipped more beer on SJ patio.....

Sunday morning found some food in SJ refer. so we made some sandwiches then drove Kevin to the airport, went to the Austin Hot Sauce Fest (me, Tom, Paul) 17000 people there including the 3 of us - We noticed the beer line moved much much faster than the hot sauce lines sooo.... never did taste the hot sauce… however Tom did take note that the winner this year was "Big Daddy's ASS BURN" motto: ‘burns like hell going in and burns like hell going out!" I'll stick to beer. Then we headed out to Ginny's Longhorn for the 4pm Dale show - had to be the BEST SCENE in world, $2 beer, free hot dogs, hot rods, vintage bikes, great people and Dale Watson... WOW.. then met up with SJ and friends for an INCREDIBLE BBQ at a place called The Salt Lick out in Driftwood (!) TX - I ate every bit and then some... by this time it's closing in on 1030 Sun nite soooo.....it's off to the Continental Club for Heybale (Hell, the night is young!!) but we are not so we sit and listen, content to quietly sip our Lonestars to finally end up once again on SJ's patio sipping one last Austin beer at 1:30 something in the TOTALLY BUG FREE (that’s right folks – no bugs) a.m.  Ran around ....Austin.... doing various errands on Monday...SJ drove us to the airport and here we are.....

I should mention here that SJ saw to it that I was supplied -for my true Texan Experience and Enjoyment- a beautiful Chevy 4x4 Ext. Cab Pick Up Truck - yeah, I'm one lucky son-of-a-gun to have one of the nicest persons in world - SJ - takin care of us! Anyway the P/U hauled us all to & from the aforementioned joints - throw in a stop for mexican food here there and you get the picture... ....Austin.... was A1 allll riiiight.....
